Internet or web based pharmacy (e-pharmacy) is somewhat of a controversial area of employment for pharmacists in the United States. In reality, there are very few true "internet pharmacists". Most prescriptions filled from internet orders, if U.S. based, are contracted out to licensed independent pharmacies or mail order pharmacies. A few pharmacies are true "web only" pharmacies, and they employ pharmacists who fill prescriptions, answer drug information questions, and correspond and interact with both patients and physicians on a regular basis. The largest internet pharmacies are actually mail order pharmacies. Most third party insurance plans and prescription insurance providers operate internet pharmacies, and many require their plan participants to utilize these services. They employ hundreds of pharmacists at various locations nationwide. All the major drug chains operate internet pharmacies as well. Patients can enter prescription refill information in their computer, and pick up their prescriptions at their local chain location or receive their medication through the mail. Laws governing internet pharmacies vary from state to state, so it is wise to be licensed as a pharmacy in each state where business may be conducted. Most internet pharmacies are licensed in all 50 states. Some true internet pharmacies are located off shore, and are not governed by US law. While many employ licensed pharmacists, others do not and may be sources of counterfeit and black-market pharmaceuticals. There is a significant risk involved when utilizing offshore internet pharmacies. We have placed pharmacists with small internet only pharmacies in the United States.
